Today These days, ECT is more important as a treatment for severe depression that has not responded to other treatments, and is also used in the treatment of mania catatonia, schizophrenia and other disorders. First, gained widespread use as a form of treatment in the 1940s and 50s, today, an estimated 1 million people worldwide receive ECT every year, [1] usually in a course of 6-12 treatments administered 2 or 3 times a week. Electroconvulsive therapy can differ in their application in three forms, placement of the electrodes, the length of time the stimulus is given, and ownership of the stimuli. The difference between these three forms of application have significant differences in both side effects and positive results. TEC has been clinically proven that the most effective treatment for severe depression, and resulting in better quality of life both short and long term. [2] After treatment, drug therapy can be continued, and some patients then receive or maintenance ECT. Side effects include confusion and memory loss for events around the time of treatment. It is widely accepted that ECT cause brain damage. [3] [4] Some types of ECT has been shown to cause persistent memory loss, [5] while the confusion usually disappears within a few hours treatment. Informed consent is a standard of modern electroconvulsive therapy. Involuntary treatment is uncommon in countries that follow contemporary standards and generally only used when the use of ECT is considered life-saving [6].
