Should be able to cut through my gun with a knife?
I have a 1861 colt repro and since I decided to cut another barrel in the first. I found I could put a break in the barell with a kitchen knife stainles steel blade area and was able to cut a little through the barell with a kitchen knife to saw. (Only change to a hacksaw later because the knife was a wedge shape and could'nt see through) Is this normal for all weapons, only reproduced black powder or just got a defective gun? (I'm only interested in making steel kitchen knives is not even that hard!) And the knives kithchen was not dull at all. yes, really. I'm glad I've only fired half the load before the material is made of has the consistency more like goo than steel.
Dave's right. A gun barrel is generally in the range of Rockwell hardness 40 .... the cheapo serrated knives are around 60 + to maintain an advantage forever. The knives, like razors, shall be adjusted to half if the flex too much, however. When you fire a cannon ball, it seems something like the cartoon where the cat is taken down the pipe and the package moves along quickly. If there was a steel barrel drive, the bullet hit the grooves and the whole thing would break into pieces. The mild steel is deformed and then reshaped on every shot.
